Trying on a new theme

Blogging 101: Love Your Theme

Today’s assignment: try out at least three other themes — even if you’re happy with yours. Try one you’re drawn to, and one you’d never use.

I love my current theme – it just seems to match the name of the blog. I get the image of me driving on the long straight roads in this enormous yellow El Camino.

I have tried out some others though. Sarah at Tucked into a corner was kind enough to comment on my post so I visited her site. I do like her Choco theme it reminds of an real notebook, or a Filofax. I really like the rounded corners. Sadly, it isn’t responsive. So it on a iPad or mobile it looks you have to use the default mobile theme.

The prompt suggested I try a theme I would never use. So I tried a new theme called the Eighties. It looked weird, I always thought the eighties was marked by naff design 😉

A train ride with my dream reader

Blogging 101: Dream Reader

Today’s Assignment: publish a post for your dream reader, and include a new-to-you element in it.

My reader’s seat awaits her

The train was running slowly, the journey was going to take three times as long as normal. “Engineering work” the ticket collector had said, “this train is often delayed as they do the engineering work at night”. You had disagreed:  you always caught the eleven or eleven thirty train you had told me, and was usually on time.

I was impressed you were still wide awake, I was dozing off, it had been a long day for me. But you were annoyed as you would be up again and on the six-thirty train tomorrow morning. I still wonder how you manage it, day after day. Yet, why did you manage it. You were nicely dressed, you were in a first-class seat, and your bag was very smart. Money you clearly had, but time was precious. You were money rich and time poor.

You are my dream reader. Perhaps you have consciously decided that this is the life you were born to lead, that this is the perfect life for you. On the other hand is it just a habit: the habit of working; the habit of assessing your success by your income; the habit of taking pride in the number of hours you work.

I wonder. And that my dream reader is all I would like you to do. I would like you to wonder, to ask yourself those questions. Nothing more, for who I am to tell you how to live your life. I just wonder whether you are in fact living your life – or are you just working it.

Blogging 101 and Writing 101 are Back!

It’s back. Or rather both Writing 101 and Blogging 101 are back.
Self discipline is now required if I am to keep up.

The Daily Post

Getting your new blog off the ground, or ready to jump-start a flagging site? It’s your lucky day! Registration is now open for the next rounds of Blogging 101 and Writing 101 — they start on Monday, September 15.

Blogging 101: Zero to Hero

My blog has gone from being dull and plain to having widgets and all this shmancy tech stuff, and from having almost no followers to having a loyal following now!

Blogging 101 is a month of bite-size blogging assignments that take you from “Blog?” to “Blog!” At the end of the month, you’ll have a blog you’re proud and excited to publish — and that others are excited to read. Here’s how it works:

  • Assignments fall into three broad categories — publishing posts, customizing your blog, and engaging with the community — and are designed to build on one another.
  • We’ll post a new assignment here on

Who I am and why I’m here

Blogging 101: Introduce Yourself

Today’s assignment: write and publish a “who I am and why I’m here” post.

I’ve been blogging for several years. So I feel it is time for a refresher. So I am travelling back to the Blogging University.

I am going to try and go through the Blogging 101 course and the Writing 101 courses run by WordPress at their Blogging U.

As far as I can see the Blogging 101 course is about blog basics – so this should be okay. The Writing 101 course is likely to be more of a challenge 🙂
